Since 2009, Toronto Zoo has offered an exciting conservation program, Aqua-Links, that gives students the hands-on opportunity to raise Atlantic salmon in their classroom. In combined partnership with Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program, Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), and Toronto District School Board, the classroom hatcheries engage young students in the larger restoration efforts for extirpated Atlantic salmon by allowing them to raise fish from egg to fry and successfully release them into approved tributaries of Lake Ontario. Each spring, participating students release over 2000 salmon fry, returning them to their native waters and gaining a thorough appreciation of conserving native Ontario species.
